This painting course will take you through the basics of painting in acrylic and watercolour. Come prepared to experiment! We’ll look at colours and how to mix them, different ways of using the brush, working in layers, creating washes and working with the palette knife. When we have had plenty of practice, we’ll create both abstract and figurative compositions.

Teen Fiction
Ages 12 and up Tuesday, 6:15 - 7:30 p.m., Sept. 24 - Nov. 10
Students will work on fiction either at home or in class and then discuss and share works in a nurturing, creative environment. The goal of the class is to have each student finish a short piece of fiction or a chapter of a book. Previous class experience preferred, but not mandatory.

Drawing Academy

The Place Drawing Academy offers a year long drawing program over three 8 week sessions - Spring/Fall/Winter. The academy program is aimed at students with a passion for drawing who want to build and develop their skills and confidence, and work on personal portfolios. In a nurturing atmosphere, students will focus on composition, lights/shadows, line contour, volume, perspective, gesture and proportion. Using these essential techniques, students work from observation, source material, and imagination. We begin with simple line drawing and work toward shadow and color, using pencil, color pencils, water color, markers, and pastels, with techniques that include shading and blending, cross hatching, and color mixing.

Photography
Ages 12 and up Sunday, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. 5 weeks, starts Sept. 22
Explore the ways photography can help you discover your own unique view of the world. This hands-on class will take field trips via the metro to local landmarks where you will use the landscape of the city to capture mood, feeling and compelling compositions. Students will learn how to control aperture, shutter speeds and ISOs and create an online portfolio of their best work. Students must supply their own digital camera, both DSLR and point & shoot cameras are welcome.

Clay is a wonderful and forgiving tactile medium. Its three dimensional nature encourages us to think about structure, shapes, and forms. We will explore a variety of building techniques while learning to think about ideas and adapt to change along the way. No prior clay or ceramics experience is required. More challenging work will be assigned to students with previous experience. Pieces will be glazed and fired.

Gain the confidence you need to continue your exploration in your own personal artistic journey. You will learn color mixing to find your very own palette of tones and colors. Learn from the Joy and lines of Matisse, the passion of Van Gogh, the soft delicate palette of Odilon Redon. Looking closely at painting techniques by Masters will inspire you to find your own style and freedom of expression. You will create original paintings on paper and canvas to enjoy for years to come.
