Karen Green Offspring

Green uses a 19th century French schoolgirl's composition book as a foundation for this new series of mixed media works on paper.  Tidy minute handwriting is layered with “Cootie Catchers ” (or Fortune Tellers), mirror and cross-writing, and drawings of uniformed schoolgirls engaged in childish games and daring feats.

Green says the work is, in part, ” about family… about orphans and shelter - what we wish families to be… who we adopt for ourselves. Hermits and orphans and superheroes.” The works are supplemented by an installation of a grove of six foot tall “family trees” arranged in a circle, each with a unique sound recording. Green was inspired by the redwoods of her native Northern California because they grow in a protective circle, shielding the “family” and its offspring.
